sama kickboxing
Sport Kickboxing originated in the United States in 1975 and was developed by a group of top karate practitioners. Unlike Thai boxing where elbows, knees and low kicks are used, Sama Kickboxing involves boxing with your hands, with the exception of the added spinning fists (not allowed in some tournaments) and kicks from karate which must be above the waist in a fight situation.
It is a hugely popular sport as it offers a full body workout with cardiovascular and resistance training whilst helping to build lean, long muscle and burn fat. It also gives valuable self defence techniques, improved flexibility and strength.
But most importantly it is great fun. All training is set to motivating music. Classes are conducted in a relaxed and friendly environment. It is suitable for all ages (from 11 upwards) and fitness levels.
Newcomers always welcome.
As with all our classes kickboxing operates a
pay-as-you-go scheme.
£4.50 for adults, £4 for under 16s.
the training
Training is based on a progressive developed grading system through to black belt. Coach qualification can also be aquired. Training sessions last one hour, and consist of usually two minute rounds of skipping and stretching exercises, followed by impact work on focus pads for punches, kicking practice on shields, shadow sparring and stamina with rests between rounds. Music is played throughout the training session making it motivating and fun.
getting started
As with all our classes, getting started it easy. Look on the Classes page to find a suitable
class in your area, then come along and have a go.
Wear comfortable clothes (t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms) and bring a water bottle.
All equipment is provided, but students will be required to purchase kickboxing uniform and wraps before taking their first grading.
Gradings structure is the same as karate. Gradings are conducted every 6 weeks and although not compulsory, most students enjoy the challenge of gaining their next belt.
See Gradings page for more information.
